The neighborhood was buzzing — and not in a cheerful, holiday way.
Mr. Smart stood at the mailbox chatting with Mr. Alvarez from two houses down.
“First it was my gardening gloves,” Mr. Alvarez said, scratching his head.
“Then my ladder was moved. I found it leaning against the fence like someone borrowed it… and forgot to ask.”
Mrs. Smart joined them, arms folded.
“You’re not the only one. Mrs. Chen’s holiday wreath disappeared for a whole day. And someone’s snowman lost its carrot nose.”
Mr. Smart laughed nervously.
“Well… at least the carrot came back.”
Across the street, a tuxedo cat listened very carefully.
Porch Headquarters — Emergency Meeting
Frankie hopped onto the porch railing with purpose.
This wasn’t one missing thing anymore.
This was a pattern.
Billie slipped into place silently.
Oreo arrived panting, carrying a mitten in his mouth.
Samy settled on the highest step, eyes calm and alert.
And Deano —
Deano took his spot right beside Frankie, shoulder to shoulder.
Frankie didn’t even need to look.
He felt him there.
“We’ve got wandering objects,” Frankie announced.
“Not stolen. Not destroyed. Just… moved.”
Billie’s ears flicked.
“Animals?”
“Possibly,” Frankie replied.
“But humans are unsettled. And when humans are unsettled, things escalate.”
Oreo raised a paw.
“I found this mitten by the bushes. Is it evidence… or laundry?”
Frankie studied it.
“Evidence.”
Deano leaned in.
“The paths don’t overlap randomly,” he said softly. “They loop back toward the alley.”
The porch went quiet.
Frankie slowly turned his head.
“That’s exactly what I was thinking.”
Samy’s tail flicked once — pleased.
Neighborhood Watch — Active Patrol
The Neighborhood Feline Watch moved out.
Frankie led.
Billie scanned the perimeter.
Oreo waddled with determination.
Samy remained behind at Headquarters — listening, sensing, advising.
And Deano?
Deano matched Frankie’s pace perfectly.
When Frankie stopped, Deano stopped.
When Frankie crouched, Deano crouched.
When Frankie tilted his head, Deano already knew why.
They followed the trail to the alley behind the houses.
A faint rustle.
A soft clatter.
Then —
A crow hopped into view, dragging a shiny spoon nearly its own size.
Frankie sighed.
“Collector.”
The crow froze.
Billie nodded.
“Makes sense. Shiny things. Lightweight items. Holiday chaos.”
Oreo whispered, “Can we keep the spoon?”
“No.”
They gently scared the crow off, retrieving a small pile of neighborhood treasures — gloves, ribbons, ornaments, and yes… the carrot nose.
Case resolved.
🏡 Inside the Smart House
Mrs. Smart smiled as she watched from the window.
“They’re at it again.”
Mr. Smart squinted.
“Frankie’s leading… but Deano’s right there. Always.”
Mrs. Smart tilted her head.
“It’s uncanny. He watches Frankie like he’s learning.”
Mr. Smart paused.
“…Do you think cats can be related and not know it?”
Mrs. Smart raised an eyebrow.
“Like… family?”
The idea lingered.
🐾Back at Headquarters
Frankie addressed the group.
“Good work. Neighborhood Watch is officially operational.”
Billie nodded.
Oreo cheered — quietly, because professionalism.
Samy purred approval.
Deano stayed beside Frankie, glowing.
“You noticed the alley loop too,” Frankie said quietly.
Deano nodded.
“I don’t know how… I just did.”
Frankie studied him for a moment longer than usual.
“Instinct,” he said at last.
“Trust it.”
Deano’s heart soared.
As the porch lights flickered on, Samy closed his eyes — wise, knowing.
Some mysteries aren’t about missing things.
Some are about connections waiting to be noticed.
And this one?
Was only beginning.
