Christmas had settled gently over the neighborhood.
Lights glowed in the windows. Snow fell without urgency. Doors opened more easily this time of year.
That’s how the knock came.
Not sharp.
Not hurried.
Just grateful.
Mr. and Mrs. Smart opened the door to find a neighbor standing there, bundled in a winter coat, holding a familiar calico cat close to her chest.
“I just wanted to thank you,” she said warmly. “Your cats helped guide her home when she slipped out back. She followed them right up to the fence.”
Just inside the doorway stood Frankie Sinatro, P.I.
Trench coat buttoned. Fedora tilted just right. Tie neat.
Beside him sat Deano, calm and alert.
Both cats faced the neighbor.
Watching.
Listening.
Frankie’s eyes narrowed slightly—not suspicion, just awareness. Deano leaned forward a fraction, matching his posture without meaning to.
The neighbor smiled at the sight.
“That orange one really adores the tuxedo cat,” she said with a quiet laugh. “He follows his lead everywhere.”
Frankie shifted his stance.
A moment later, Deano did the same.
Mrs. Smart noticed.
So did Mr. Smart.
The neighbor hesitated, then asked the question gently, as if it surprised even her.
“Are they brothers?”
The words hung there—not heavy, not dramatic. Just curious.
Frankie didn’t react right away.
Patterns don’t prove anything, he thought.
But they do deserve a closer look.
Deano glanced up at Frankie. Frankie met his eyes. No answers passed between them—but something steady did.
The neighbor said her goodbyes, grateful and smiling, and the door closed softly behind her.
The house grew quiet again.
Christmas lights hummed.
Mrs. Smart exhaled.
“You know,” she said thoughtfully, “people have asked that before.”
Mr. Smart nodded.
“They move alike,” he said. “Same timing. Same instincts.”
From the doorway, Frankie listened.
From beside him, Deano listened too.
“It doesn’t change anything,” Mrs. Smart added quickly. “Not who they are. Not how they belong here.”
Mr. Smart smiled.
“Of course not,” he said. “But there’s nothing wrong with being curious.”
Frankie adjusted his fedora slightly.
Facts before feelings, he thought. That’s how cases stay clean.
Deano leaned closer, shoulder brushing Frankie’s coat.
Mrs. Smart looked down at them both.
“What do you think?” she asked softly. “Would it help to know?”
Frankie didn’t answer out loud.
But his posture stayed calm. Steady. Open.
Deano didn’t move away.
That was answer enough.
Later that evening, after the lights were dimmed and the house had settled, Mr. and Mrs. Smart talked quietly at the kitchen table.
“If we do this,” Mrs. Smart said, “it’s just information. Nothing more.”
“Exactly,” Mr. Smart replied. “Facts—not labels.”
In the other room, Frankie sat watching the window. Deano sat beside him.
Snow continued to fall.
Two cats.
One doorway.
One question waiting patiently for its turn.
And somewhere between curiosity and care, a new case quietly opened.
