It was one of those nights — crisp air, rustling leaves, and pumpkins grinning like they knew something I didn’t.

The porch light flickered once, twice, then steadied. Billie was watching from her favorite corner, eyes half-open but ears twitching. Oreo sat proudly beside the candy bowl like a security guard with a sweet tooth. Samy, of course, was snoring in rhythm with the wind.

I adjusted my fedora and squinted into the yard. Something moved. Slow. Slippery. Sneaky.

A shadow.

“Billie,” I whispered, “you see that?”

She yawned. “Probably a trick-or-treater, Frankie.”

“Trick-or-treaters don’t slink.”

There it was again — gliding past the flowerpots. A chill ran down my tail.

Oreo’s fur puffed up. “It’s the ghost of the kibble bowl!” he gasped.

“Relax, pal,” I said. “Ghosts don’t crunch leaves.”

The wind carried a faint jingle — a collar bell, maybe — and then, from the darkness, two glowing eyes blinked back at me.

I stepped forward, slow and steady, magnifying glass ready. “Alright, shadow,” I muttered, “let’s see what secrets you’re hiding.”

The figure froze. Then came a soft mew.

It was a kitten — small, scruffy, and trembling by the gate.

Behind me, Billie’s voice softened. “Frankie… she’s just scared.”

I took off my hat, crouched low, and met her eyes. “Aren’t we all,” I whispered.

Mrs. Smart opened the door, porch light pouring gold over the scene. “Everything alright out here, Detective?”

I gave a little smile. “Case solved, ma’am. Just another lost soul needing a porchlight.”

She bent down, lifting the kitten into her arms. “Then we’ll keep the light on.”

Inside, warmth replaced the wind. Oreo returned to his candy guard post, Billie purred in approval, and Samy snored louder than ever.

Another mystery solved — not with claws or cunning, but with kindness.

Because in the world of Whisker Winks… even shadows have hearts.

Case closed. 🎃❤️
